Having lived in Tokyo for several years now, I can confidently say there are unique reasons why I truly recommend life in Tokyo.
I was born in Japan, raised in the countryside, later lived alone in suburban Saitama, and now I live in the very heart of Tokyo.
Of course, every region of Japan has its own charm.
But when I compare all of these lifestyles, Tokyo stands out by far.
Affordable and Delicious Food
For many visitors from abroad, the biggest surprise is this:
Tokyo offers some of the most delicious food in the world at unbelievably low prices.
I’ve traveled to several countries, but nowhere else have I found the same balance of quality and affordability as in Tokyo.
A More Open Community
Japanese communities can often feel homogeneous and difficult for outsiders to enter.
This is especially true in rural areas, where local communities tend to be very closed-off—even for Japanese people themselves.
However, the closer you get to central Tokyo, the weaker this tendency becomes.
In the heart of the city, the community feels far more open and diverse, making it easier to adapt and connect.
Avoiding the Suburban Commute
Here’s an important insight I gained from living here:
Many Japanese people don’t actually live in Tokyo proper. Instead, they live in the suburbs and commute into the city on packed trains.
While rush-hour trains can be stressful, the truth is that congestion in Tokyo is very time- and location-dependent.
- Some shopping malls in central Tokyo are almost empty during weekday working hours.
- On the weekends, when business areas are quiet, you’ll find plenty of empty cafés that are perfect for relaxing.
This rhythm of the city is something you can use to your advantage once you live here.
Living vs. Visiting
Tourists often head straight to places like Shibuya or Shinjuku, and they’re shocked by the overwhelming crowds.
But here’s the truth: these places are great for visiting, not for living.
If you’re considering living in Tokyo, I recommend avoiding the famous tourist hubs.
Instead, explore neighborhoods slightly away from the main attractions—you’ll find quiet, livable, and surprisingly comfortable areas that suit daily life.
Final Thoughts
Tokyo is more than its busy image.
It is a city where you can enjoy world-class food at low cost, open communities, and a surprisingly comfortable lifestyle if you learn how to navigate its rhythms.
That is why I truly recommend living in Tokyo.
